Anger - Self-Monitoring Record
The Anger - Self-Monitoring Record is a structured tool designed to collect valuable information about how clients experience anger and aggression.
Anger - Self-Monitoring Record
Anger is a normal emotion. Feeling angry is your mind and body’s response to a perceived threat. For example, you might feel annoyed if someone takes advantage of you or furious if you’ve been treated unfairly. However, anger can become a problem when:
- It gets triggered too often.
- It’s very intense and causes distress (for you or other people).
- It turns into aggression or violence.
- It interferes with your life and relationships.
One way to learn more about your anger is to use a self-monitoring record. It’s like a diary that helps you become more aware of what triggers your anger, how you respond to it, and the role your thoughts play.
Complete this record whenever you feel angry or as your therapist has instructed.
Overview
Developing self-monitoring skills teaches clients to systematically observe and record specific targets such as their own thoughts, body feelings, emotions, and behaviors. Though it’s usually introduced early in the therapy process, it can continue to provide an inexpensive and constant measure of problem symptoms and behaviors throughout treatment. The Anger - Self-Monitoring Record worksheet is designed to help clients capture information about situations where they experienced feelings of anger or responded aggressively.
