Behavioral Experiment
Behavioral experiments enable clients to test beliefs and achieve lasting changes through experiential learning.
Behavioral Experiment
We all have beliefs about ourselves and how we think the world works. These beliefs (and the predictions they lead to) can have a big impact on what we think, feel, and do. But what if these beliefs aren’t entirely true?
A helpful comparison is how scientists test their beliefs. Scientists try to hold their beliefs ‘lightly’ – they treat them as ideas or guesses about how the world works, rather than facts. They then set up experiments to find out whether these ideas are accurate.
You can use this Behavioral Experiment tool to:
- Identify a belief that you want to test.
- Design an experiment to test your belief.
- Record what happened and reflect on the results.
Overview
Behavioral experiments are integral to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), providing a structured framework for testing and re-evaluating beliefs. This resource guides clients in designing and conducting meaningful experiments, as well as reflecting on their learning.
