CBT Thought Record Portrait

Hundreds of ‘automatic’ thoughts pop into our minds every day, often without us noticing. Depending on their content, these thoughts can lead us to feel different emotions, like joy, anxiety, anger, or sadness (to name just a few).

Our thoughts can also be biased: not every thought we have is 100% accurate or helpful. Because our thoughts affect how we  feel, biased thinking can contribute to emotional difficulties such as anxiety and depression.

The CBT Thought Record (Portrait) helps you:

  • Notice situations that lead to negative thoughts and feelings
  • Identify your negative thoughts
  • Evaluate the evidence for and against their accuracy.

Use this record whenever you experience negative thoughts or feelings, or as your therapist has instructed.

Overview

Cognitive therapy emphasizes the impact that thoughts have on emotions and behavior. Beck’s cognitive model asserts that our interpretation of events - rather than the events themselves - shapes our emotional responses. The CBT Thought Record helps clients examine their negative automatic thoughts (NATs) to support accurate thinking and reduce distress.
