Embracing Uncertainty
Embracing Uncertainty is designed to help clients manage anxiety related to uncertain situations by gradually introducing elements of unpredictability into their lives.
Embracing Uncertainty
Are you someone who enjoys surprises, or do you prefer certainty and control? While some people don’t mind uncertainty, others really dislike it.
People who struggle with uncertainty often do things that help them feel more in control, such as worrying (mentally preparing for the worst) and avoidance (sticking to the same routines so life feels safe and predictable). Unfortunately, both responses make people even less tolerant of uncertainty, which can make their difficulties worse.
The good news is that you can learn to tolerate uncertainty by exposing yourself to less predictable situations. This Embracing Uncertainty exercise will help you introduce more uncertainty into your life to build up your emotional tolerance and feel more confident.
Overview
Intolerance of uncertainty can lead to negative emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions. Originally associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), intolerance manifests as behaviors such as worry and avoidance that aim to increase a sense of certainty. This resource assists therapists in guiding clients through exercises that help them more comfortable with uncertainty, thereby promoting flexibility and resilience.
