Schema Model – Here And Now

Schema therapy is based on the idea that many difficulties stem from early maladaptive schemas (or ‘schemas’ for short).

Schemas are negative themes or patterns in how you think and feel that repeat throughout your life. People develop schemas because some of their core emotional needs were not met when they were children, like the need for love and protection, self-expression, or independence.

Schemas are made up of different components. They include negative thoughts and beliefs, emotions, physical sensations, and memories. Schemas are also painful to experience, so we do our best to cope with them. Unfortunately, these ‘coping responses’ often make schemas stronger in the long run.

This Schema Model – Here And Now will help you understand and recognize when your schemas are active. Exploring their different components can also highlight what you need to do to heal them.

Overview

Formulation is central to schema therapy, offering a structured way for clients and therapists to make sense of psychological difficulties. The Schema Model – Here And Now worksheet provides a descriptive framework for understanding the emotional, cognitive, somatic, and behavioral components of early maladaptive schemas (EMS). By anchoring exploration in a recent triggering event, this resource helps clients identify schema-related patterns and supports meaningful formulation work early in treatment. Therapists can use this tool to introduce schema concepts, deepen self-awareness, and guide targeted interventions.
